Why not book a place on one of our free workshops at the fair?

As this is our tenth year, we've organised lots of lovely workshops for people, all for FREE.

You can make your own book, for instance - every one of those book artists who have been part of this year's Hot Bed Press book arts residencies is running a workshop, giving you the opportunity to make a concertina book, a turkish map fold, a flowerfold and/or a beak book.  With the beak book you can also create your own piece of deathless prose by having a go at blackout storytelling (intrigued?  Book a place).

Or you can join Book Transformations and (guess what) transform an old book into something exciting and sculptural, just by folding and a little bit of sticking.

There are limited places on the workshops, so we're taking bookings before the event.  Just look at the timetable on the 'what to do' page, choose the workshops you fancy, then use the contact form to let us know which ones you'd like to do. You'll take away something you've created yourself - it could be the beginning of something beautiful!

Workshops and more at the fair

We're going for added value at this year's fair, and have organised all sorts of extras, from an exhibition of a collaborative project between college art departments in the Wirral and the USA, to various workshops to do with (well what a surprise) books, and taking in our Reading Room and the chance to discover curious words on the way.  Most events won't need to be booked, but if you want to learn about a flower fold, or try blackout story-writing in a beak book, then you should save yourself a place.  For more details have a look at what to see and do at the fair. and if you want to take part in a workshop, let us know using the contact form.

Tables are filling up nicely

Tables for this year's fair are filling up nicely, so don't wait too long if you're thinking of booking one.  We're developing the usual mix of new and old exhibitors (which I like to think pleases everyone) and are working on the 'extras' - mini workshops, special exhibitions, demonstrations, that sort of thing.  It's all beginning to be quite exciting!

Exhibitors only go on the website once they have found an image they're happy to use, so those on the 2015 exhibitor page at the moment form just a fraction of the total booked so far, but do go and have a look at what's on offer already.

All over for 2014

All the preparation, the frantic last minute tweaks of this and that, the problems, the rushing every which way - then the fair is there for a scant two days before it's all over, done and dusted for another year.

As ever, thank you to everyone who was involved in anyway - the volunteers from Hot Bed Press who made everything run so smoothly, the gallery staff, Duncan who designed the lovely new banners for us, Sue and Martin who demonstrated paper marbling and letterpress printing respectively, the visitors and of course the exhibitors who produced such a fantastic range of work for us all to enjoy.
Here's just a flavour of the fair - the rest of the photos will arrive on the site in the next few weeks.  If you missed the whole thing this year, let's hope we'll see you next autumn.

From left to right, work by Alex Pritchard of AP Books, Joanna Wilkinson and Roni Gross.

Don't forget that next week, on Monday 20th October,  New York-based book artist Roni Gross will be giving a talk entitled 25 years of Zitouna.
Zitouna have issued multiples for the past 25 years.  Begun as a means of celebrating the secular holidays of Halloween and Valentine’s Day, these projects developed into explorations of the themes of love and death.  The objects have taken many forms over the years - letterpress, offset and xerox prints, photography, watercolour and collage are just some of the mediums employed. Many pieces are in the permanent collections of universities and museums.

The talk should be excellent and will be from 7pm to 8.30pm at Hot Bed Press, Casket Works, Cow Lane (off Oldfield Road), Salford M5 4NB - tickets will be sold on the door, £10 (£5 for Hot Bed Press members).

A trip to MMU Special Collections today was also a chance to see their latest exhibition, Material Matters - how different materials have been used in art, craft and design.  It's a fascinating range. including ceramics, wood, metal, enamel, glass and paper - and amongst the examples of paper use are artists' books by Mette Sofie Ambeck, Karen Pilling and Ron King.

During the two days of the fair, Special Collections will have a range of artists' books from their collection on show in the Special Collections Library Reading Room, for visitors to enjoy and handle.  They have also noticed there will be a demonstration of paper marbling at the fair, and to complement that they will be displaying some of their stunning marbled papers, including pieces by Tirza Ravilious, Golden Cockerel Press and Karli Frigge.  Some of the examples are jaw-droppingly stunning and have to be seen to be believed!  Don't pass up the opportunity to see them.

We're always pleased if we can organise some practical demonstrations to take place at the fair, and this year we have persuaded Sue Shaw to show off her paper marbling skills and Martin Kochany once again to display the fine art of letterpress printing.  Both techniques have been in use for more than 500 years, and each still has a special beauty and attraction today.

The demonstrations will take place on Saturday only - Sue's is scheduled for 1pm and Martin's for 3pm.
